Environmental Compatibility of the
RINGtech®-Construction System
The tyre is a conventional commodity, whose environmental compatibility
has been investigated not only in terms of proper use, but also in
connection with diverse recycling options. In this regard, we have carried
out research throughout the world and have acquired extensive data
material, which has recently been evaluated by an expert within the
framework of a literature-based study. Results are available from the
following studies:
 |
|
Elution studies (short and long-term analyses) |
 |
|
Eco-toxicological studies (acute and chronic) |
 |
|
Studies regarding the long-term stability of tyres |
 |
|
Biocoenosis studies |
 |
|
Bioaccumulation studies |
Depending on the relevant boundary conditions, the results of these
studies differ. It is, however, certain that no damage due to scrap tyres
was determined in open-air studies on aquatic biocoenoses. Quite the
opposite: In the USA, the use of scrap tyres in bodies of water is
actually recommended in order to improve the biocoenotic situation. In
addition, no substances which may have accumulated from scrap tyres have
been detected in biota up to present. The long-term durability of tyres in
salt water has been verified via the recovery of a ship loaded with tyres,
which has been resting on the sea bed off the Scottish coast for 40 years.
In order to make absolutely certain that RINGtech® products do not
pose any potential danger to the environment, we commissioned a further
expert report. This involved the documentation of possible effects on the
physical-chemical and ecological condition of bodies of water. The aim was
to obtain a realistic and comprehensive profile, specifically with regard
to the widespread and long-term use of RINGtech® products in
Federal waterways. The study was carried out by a recognised auditing
institution, The Ruhr Area Hygiene Institute, whereby the study programme
was coordinated in advance with numerous experts and the Federal Institute
of Water Studies (BfG).
The expert report is now available, and confirms the following:
On transposition of the laboratory results to the real installation
conditions, with leaching concentrations which are lower by several powers
of ten, and the high water exchange rates found in bodies of water, RINGtech®
products pose no potential risk to the environment.
The use of RINGtech® products has accordingly been recommended by
the Hygiene Institute and approved by the BfG.
